Oxygen (Home Oxygen)

Medical Equipment, Parent Support, Technology & Aids

If a child needs oxygen at home, it will be prescribed by their consultant.

Equipment Provided:
The necessary equipment includes an oxygen concentrator, which extracts oxygen from the air, along with portable oxygen cylinders for mobility. Additionally, you’ll receive nasal cannulas or masks to deliver the oxygen, and possibly humidifiers to add moisture to the oxygen if needed.

Reasons for Oxygen Use:
Oxygen therapy may be needed for various medical conditions such as chronic lung diseases, congenital heart defects, or other respiratory issues that prevent adequate breathing. It helps to ensure that the child’s body gets enough oxygen to function properly, aiding in their overall health and recovery.

Home Safety Measures:

  • No Smoking: Ensure that nobody smokes near the oxygen equipment as it can easily catch fire.

  • Fire Safety: Keep fire extinguishers accessible, and educate family members on how to use them.

  • Proper Storage: Store oxygen tanks securely in an upright position to prevent tipping.

  • Electrical Safety: Ensure electrical cords are not frayed and avoid using oxygen equipment around open flames or sparks.

  • Ventilation: Maintain good ventilation in the room where the oxygen concentrator is used to prevent oxygen buildup.

By following these guidelines, you can help create a safe environment for a child receiving oxygen therapy at home.
